Chelsea Brown

Year born, location, education?
Born in 1988 in Manhattan, NY. I lived in New Jersey for a few years, but I'm mostly from Northern California, and now I make my home in San Francisco. I recently graduated from UCSB with a degree in Costume Design.

How long have u been living there?
I've been happily nesting in the city for 7 months now, and I don't plan on leaving any time soon!

Where do you get your inspiration?
I love research, so a lot of my inspiration comes from what I'm researching on the internet or *gasp* books! I love supernatural phenomena, cosmology myths, legends, weird rituals, warriors, anything pertaining to Native American history, aesthetic and culture. Powerful females always inspire me, as well as music, movies and epic fictions.

What's your favourite color?
moody blues....mmmmm.

When are you the most productive?
When I'm working on a large table in good light. It helps to get an early start, too.

Where is your favourite vacation-spot?
I have not traveled enough to be absolutely sure, but I recently had an excellent winter in Belgium.

What kind of music do you like?
This depends upon my mood and who is around to make fun of me...but I like everything from Daft Punk to Mozart. Fever Ray could probably make theme song for my work, she gets me going.

Any exhibitions planned?
Yes! I have a couple; April 14th at the MiniBar SF as a part of the SF Artwalk. Then I have a one night only show at the 111 Minna Gallery on April  21st. After that I have a group show at Public Works on April 28th in SF, and after that I have a group show on May 19th at the Project One gallery, which is  also in SF. Lots of work coming my way.

What is your favourite material to work on?
Multi media paper! Great for indecision! I've recently discovered the wonders of oil paint on wood.

What are your tools? (special pens, colors etc.)
Ye olde micron pen, colored pencils, oils, gouache, acrylic, watercolor, graphite. Those are pretty much my weapons of choice.
