Matt Cipov // Interview
Age, location, education?

I am 31 years old... born and raised in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin, USA... I attended the Milwaukee, Institute of Art and Design from 1995 to 1999 where I obtained a BFA in Illustration.

How long have u been living there?

Wisconsin is my home. I never want to leave! I know it can become a big, snowy mess in the winter, but this part of the country has such a bizarre charm and I never want to leave it behind.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get inspired by all sorts of snippets that pass before my eyes and thru my ears every day. People I see out in public, conversations I hear, words in a book, art I see other people make, songs I listen to, strange things from nature, ideas that come to me in dreams and day dreams... these things fuel my art.

What's your favourite color?

One certain days you might catch me saying that my favorite color is green. That is my color of choice that goes back to my childhood. But from time to time I actually think my favorite color is pink. A very Easter egg pink.

When are you the most productive?

There is no one system, or pattern to my creative spurts. All I know is that when I feel compelled to make art, the force of it feels like a whirlwind and I need to make whatever it is I have on my mind. Lately I have not felt super compelled to make art, but I know the urge will be returning quite soon.

And if you asked the question 'When are you least productive?' my answer would be 'from 7:30am to 10am'. I am not much of an early morning artist.

Where is your favourite vacation-spot?

I am not a very worldly person and I don't travel too often. When I do, it is the simple trips that often make me the happiest. There is a part of Wisconsin called the Dells... it is a sort of resort and amusement area full of all sorts of goofy, or strange, or fun things for me and my family to do. I have been going their since my early childhood and I don't think I could ever tire of it.

What kind of music do you like?

I am a very eclectic music fan... I like all sorts of instrumental music... rock... glitchy electronic stuff... old, old, OLD country... new wave... Italian disco... weird hip hop... and I listen to all sorts of non-musical audio too, like spoken word albums, comedy and all sorts of book.

Any exhibitions planned this year?

I have a show planed for Las Vegas and another one in San Francisco. A few other appearances might end up happening, but I will not be focusing too much on gallery showings this year. It is a very rigorous thing for me and I often prefer showing my work to people in other ways.

What is your favourite material to work on?

I like all kinds of paper. Lots of different colors... lots of different thicknesses. I loved regular paper and card stock as a child and I still love it now.

What are your tools? (special pens, colors etc.)

My main tools are the PILOT BPS FINE BALLPOINT PEN... Sharpie brand markers... and a variety of paint pens and markers from Sakura, Hunt, Elmer's and Sharpie. If you took those tools away from me, I would be incredibly sad and I would not enjoy making art as much.
